Before the Trip

After you have read 1984 and been floored by its brilliance, you will be compelled to go see Moscow, the place where many of the events referred to in the novel indirectly took place.

Join the 'Communist Tour' of Moscow to see some of the places and ideas represented in the novel.

The Communist Tour of Moscow

The KGB Building in Moscow which housed the secret services during Stalin's rules just as The Ministry of Love did in 1984.

The October Revolution Plaque which brought Communism to Russia. Paradoxically, today, the plaque sits next to a Rolex store--the epitome of consumerism and capitalism. In the novel, we read about the Revolution which brought about Big Brother's rule in Oceania and removed the top hat wearing capitalists.

The Revolution Square where Lenin led the Revolution to bring about Communism in the country. You can imagine the Victorian Square from the novel where the prisoners were paraded, the suitcase containing the manifesto was exchanged, Julia and Winston met without looking at each other in the novel.

The Bolshoi Theatre where Lenin gave his first speeches. This isn't a direct parallel from the novel, but we can imagine the 2 minute hate and other gatherings in which Big Brother gave his speeches being held in such a theatre.

Communist propaganda such as this can be found on various streets of downtown Moscow. Relate this to the Party propaganda in the novel such as Big Brother's poster and the INGSOC poster.

A park with a statue of Karl Marx, the philosopher who laid the foundation for the communist economic and political ideology.

The first McDonald's that came to Russia in 1991 lies on the far side of the road. This is where people lined up for miles in 1991 showing that they were ready for capitalism. Such a downfall of communism is not really shown in 1984, but Orwell's primary aim is to show the importance of individualism and the dangers of communism.
